Upcoming Events

This month the Matlock Storytelling Cafe brings a blast of Mexico to Matlock as Mike Payton tells Bullfighting Widows and Haunted Cows - tales from Milpa Alta, Mexico

"A fantastic set of stories, beautifully told..." Torriano story club

Florencio loves his tacos, but when the cows start talking to him at the slaughterhouse, his appetite quickly leaves him. The cows' tale leads him to discover devilish goings on in the local church - but what power does a simple labourer when faced with such dark magic?

Bullfighting Widows...is a series of tales from Milpa Alpa, a small town well known for its myths and legends, long since swallowed by Mexico City. Mike Payton lived and worked in central Mexico for a number of years, collecting folk tales along the way - these stories were given to him by his friend's abuela shortly before he returned to the UK.

Mike is now based in Nottingham, and co-runs the Matlock Storytelling Cafe and Beeston Tales. He specialises in the folklore of Mexico, and was recently invited to perform at The British Museum as part of their 2015 Day of the Dead
celebrations.

Also, we welcome our own David Whittington with a strange, thought provoking triplet of tales entitled Life, Love and Lost Souls, with some personal reflections on the strangeness of life.
