Matlock Storytelling Cafe presents Saul Jaffé with Year Zero: Ovid's Metamorphoses on Friday 1st June at the Imperial Rooms, Matlock.

The fall of the Roman Republic gives rise to a murderous Empire and a time of cataclysmic change. Two gods in human form walk the earth: one represents the old world order, the other, the new and in their clash, the course of world history is irrevocably altered.

And yet, somewhere in the midst of this transition lies a no man’s land of time. A Year Zero. The fulcrum on which history pivots. And perfectly poised at this point stands a witness, a storyteller: Ovid, whose Metamorphoses uniquely capture this period of tortuous transition. But these tales are far from bound by their historical context. Instead they capture a universal humanity that is brutal, beautiful, cruel and comic. A yearning for what could be versus what is. Two thousand years later his tales of physical, spiritual and emotional transition still pervade our culture, their truths ringing deep somewhere inside us.

Tickets cost £7 and are available from The Greenway Cafe, Snitterton Rd, Matlock OR by calling Storytelling Cafe on 01629 580023. Or you can pay on the door. Delicious cakes and savoury snacks available. BYOB. The Café is in The Imperial Rooms, Matlock DE4 3NL. Doors open 6.45, show begins 7.30.
