About Traditional Music

Music has, for centuries, formed an integral part of life in the villages and towns of the world. Local musicians are in great demand for social occasions, religious festivals, community ritual and celebration.  In English villages in Thomas Hardy's time musicians would play for the local dance on the Saturday night, and the church service on the Sunday morning, and their tunes are part of our heritage (see the Village Music Project for more information on this).

Today's traditional musicians play for singing and dancing, and they also enjoy playing music for its own sake.  The Traditional Arts Team runs a range of instrumental music activities every month including music sessions and the Moseley Village Band.  It also organises occasional day workshops with inspirational tutors, and a programme of workshops each year at the Moseley Folk Festival.
