You may not see traditional dancing around very often but there is lots of it about.  It comes in different forms and doesn't always need a lot of experience so can be enjoyed by everyone.  Social dances where people just go to dance with each other and have fun are usually supported by a caller who will tell you what to do.  These dances might be called ceilidhs, barn dances or country dances.  Other traditional dances are done in teams (sometimes called sides) and will take some training and practice.  These include morris dancing, rapper dancing, sword dancing and step or clog dance.

The Traditional Arts Team organises social dances from time to time, and has already run a couple of rapper dance workshops.  We are now working with our associated group Brethren Border Morris who meet every Wednesday evening, and they will work with us to set up a programme of dance workshops.

Information about traditional dance events throughout the Midlands can be found in our article "Where can I learn to ... dance?"  - a short guide first published in Folk Monthly in 2008.  If you know of activities not listed there, let us know and we'll add them.
